As of right now, the controversy surrounding NFTs has yet to subside, and news stories about this attempt at digital ownership/currency continue to surface in the gaming sphere. Often, these news stories cover video game companies that seem all too eager to incorporate NFTs into their future products despite the numerous issues people have with them. But as more recent news has shown, the enthusiasm for NFTs in gaming appears mostly relegated to famous publishers as well as those already invested in cryptocurrencies. So far, most developers, indie studios, and entities supporting indie projects have rejected NFTs outright. And just today, Itch.io, the gaming strorefront that allows indie developers to host and sell their games, has joined this crowd, as it referred to NFTs as “a scam.”
Itch.io made its stance clear in a tweet thread posted on February 5. The platform specifically addressed proponents of NFTs, stating: “NFTs are a scam. If you think they are legitimately useful for anything other than the exploitation of creators, financial scams, and the destruction of the planet the[n] we ask that [you] please reevaluate your life choices.”

Additionally, Itch.io expressed ire toward companies that claim to support developers while pushing for NFTs in their games, saying that they care exclusively about profit. Itch.io felt warranted in calling out companies in this manner due to “the now easily available discourse concerning the problems of NFTs.”
Some believe that NFTs will inevitably become widely adopted in the gaming sphere, but the ever-increasing number of vocal opponents like Itch.io, as well as many companies’ rescinding of their original NFT plans, suggests that this may not be a foregone conclusion. Itch.io’s view of NFTs as a scam is far from an uncommon opinion among those working in the gaming industry. If enough of them voice their concerns, the hype currently surrounding NFTs could very well fizzle out.
