Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Super Bowl trailer has plenty of nods to the games

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has a new trailer with loads of details that eagle-eyed Sonic fans should take notice of. The trailer comes just ahead of the Super Bowl and manages to cram quite a bit of information in just over 40 seconds. And just like the trailer that was shown off at The Game Awards, there’s a lot to talk about.

Judging from the trailer, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks to be taking a lot more from the games than the first film did. From the inclusion of classic characters like Tails and Knuckles, to set pieces taken straight from a few of the games, this is sure to be good news for Sonic fans.

That trailer sure was speedy

The first big thing to notice in the trailer is the chase between Sonic and Knuckles as they snowboard down a mountain. Immediately, this is reminiscent of a similar scene from Sonic Adventure, where Sonic also snowboards down a gigantic mountain. Of course, then, Sonic was being chased by a massive avalanche and not an angry echidna. The question here is whether you’d rather get chased by a never-ending wall of snow or Knuckles, and that’s a pretty hard decision to make.

The bulk of the plot seems to take most of its inspiration from Sonic & Knuckles. In that game, the two characters were at odds as Dr. Eggman had convinced Knuckles that Sonic was trying to steal the Master Emerald. A similar story could be taking place here, as Knuckles and Dr. Eggman seem to be working together. There’s also a shot of Sonic and Knuckles fighting near the Master Emerald. So, the inspirations are pretty clear.

Towards the end of the trailer, a familiar-looking gigantic mech appears, which is a clear homage to the Death Egg Robot from the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game. This time around it looks to be seriously massive, making Sonic and Tails look tiny by comparison. If this is the final set piece of the film, it could certainly be an impressive way to end it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s newest trailer sets up a lot of exciting stuff. Thankfully we won’t need to wait too much longer, as the film releases on April 8.
